Harlan High School Guidance Counselor Receives KCTCS Pathfinder Award

HARLAN, Ky. – During a surprise event at Harlan High School, guidance counselor Cristal Pace became the first high school educator to receive the KCTCS Pathfinder Award. Established by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), the Pathfinder Award recognizes high school teachers and counselors for their outstanding efforts to assist students with their college-going plans.

“High school teachers and counselors work tirelessly to help students succeed in the classroom, workplace, and community,” said Southeast President Vic Adams. “In that spirit, the Pathfinder Award recognizes those who go above and beyond for our next generation. Thanks to Cristal Pace, countless students in Harlan are able to follow their dreams and make sound decisions about their future.”

High school teachers and counselors are eligible for the Pathfinder Award if nominated by a KCTCS student or employee. Winners were selected based on the following criteria: (1) encouraged students to attend a KCTCS college; (2) assisted students in identifying a career and postsecondary path; (3) provided mentorship; (4) and maintained contact with students.

In addition to Pace, the Pathfinder Award will be presented to one teacher or counselor from each of the other 15 KCTCS colleges. All total, almost 250 nominations were submitted.
